At House of Refuge East (HRE), our business is taking the broken human spirit and restoring it body, mind and soul. We feel that by educating and assisting the entire person we not only strengthen the individual, but the family as well.
HRE consists of 88 two-bedroom homes and a Chapel/annex all located in a community setting. On any given day approximately 100 adults and 150 children call House of Refuge East "home". Because greater than 50% of our residents come from domestic violence shelters, this will often be the first safe home some children will have experienced.
We provide a social service program with emphasis on targeting the root cause of each individual's homeless situation. Through this program each resident receives services to help prepare them to make the transition to permanent housing and independent living. Supportive services typically deal with employment, education, substance abuse and transportation issues. Working together, staff and participants develop strategies to cope with problems and buld necessary life skills. Together, they monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to short and long term goals. Since homelessness is usually a combination of factors including; poverty, chronic low wages, inadequate training and education, physical and psychological abuse, deficient life skills and alcohol and/or drug dependency it is essential that participants come to HRE with an honest desire for change in order to make the life changes necessary for success.
We extend to you and open invitation to come tour our campus. We are very proud of our organization and it successful history. Let us show you in person what we cannot convey in words.
