Breakthrough Therapy Through… Coloring

Coloring for Adults?

Coloring doesn’t have to just be for kids. It’s also a great introspective activity for adults! Coloring can help adults relax and unwind after a stressful day. There is a countless variety of coloring books for adults, with beautiful pictures and amazing designs waiting to come to life.

Aside from the coloring book, a good set of colored pencils and a pencil sharpener (manual or electric) are the only supplies needed to start de-stressing.

It can be remarkably soothing to simply color in a few lines, and only takes a few minutes. Many people think of coloring as childish, but maybe they have forgotten how relaxing it can be. In fact, many therapists have suggested that coloring is a great way to release built up stress. Some therapists even have the patient color during the therapy session. It relaxes the patient and often helps them to communicate better.

As mentioned before, there is a great variety of coloring books for adults. At most retail stores you can find at least a few coloring books that are made for adults rather than children. The pictures can range from beautiful floral designs to crazy geometric designs, and anything in between. There really is a coloring book for everyone.

Buying more than one coloring book can make it easier to always have one on hand. That way, when you start feeling stressed you can take a quick time-out and color in a few lines. It can be very engaging to watch a picture come to life, and it helps keep the mind from worrying and stressing.

Most adults prefer to have a large set of colored pencils, with a wide variety of colors. It’s also a good idea to have more than one pencil sharpener, to keep your pencils freshly sharpened and ready to use.

By looking back at pictures that they have finished in the past, the individual is able to really see their progress. In their earlier pictures they might see uneven coloring, sharp lines, holes in the paper, or another problem. Then, as they look at their more recent pictures, they can see how much they have improved. The pictures will have even coloring and softer lines. It’s a great way to feel good.

It’s perfectly okay to color outside the lines, or to make one’s own lines. Pre-printed designs are not the only way to color. If an individual is artistic they might wish to make their own design to color.

There is no need for an adult to feel silly for wanting to color. It is continuing to become more and more common, as therapists and counselors continue to suggest that it is a great way to reduce stress levels.

Coloring is also a good way for addicts to stop their addiction. They can concentrate on coloring instead of their addiction. It helps to keep the mind focused on something positive.

Coloring is for everyone, from the stressed counseling patient to the tired single mom. Everyone should keep a coloring book around and take a few minutes every day to relax and de-stress.
